Newsletter, Nov. 5, 2012 – Fighting Brain Addiction and Supporting Recovery!

Dear Friends,I just attended the annual review course in Holistic and Integrative Medicine at Scripps in San Diego. One inspiring lecture that really resonated with me addressed the importance of the “L word” in treating our patients: LOVE!!! Works for me. We know that the doctor — patient relationship is the basis for healing — and for me, practicing medicine would be empty without it. Now we have the research to prove it!

The Addicted Brain I’m thrilled with the feedback to my newest e-Book, “The Addicted Brain and How to Break Free.” So, do you think only crackheads and alcoholics struggle with addiction? Do you think your love of your morning coffee or favorite cheese is completely innocent, or is there something more to it? Check out this excerpt from The Addicted Brain and How to Break Free:

  • Do you have anxiety or depression for no apparent reason and comfort yourself with food, especially carbs (like sugar)?
  • Do you use caffeine to keep you going all day?
  • How important is that after work glass of wine or drink?

So, you may be addicted — but it may not be what you think. Here are some common myths about addiction:

Myth 1: Compulsive use of an addictive substance is a sign of weakness or poor moral character.

Fact: You are not a weak or “bad” person. Rather, you have a brain chemistry imbalance, and moral character may have little to do with it.

Myth 2: Chronic addiction is a disease that can be treated with prescription drugs.

Fact: While you may have a chemical imbalance, it’s not likely a Prozac or Xanax deficiency.

Myth 3: Avoiding relapse is a constant struggle for recovering substance abusers.

Fact: Once you’re in balance, any craving to use is simply a sign that you need to correct your nutrition.

Myth 4: “Substance abuse runs in my family so I can’t help it.”

Fact: If you have a family history of substance abuse, you simply have to be more careful than most to take the appropriate nutrients.

Addicted The Addicted Brain and How to Break Free“This book is about addictions; yours, that of your friends and relatives, and society as a whole. For starters, my approach to addiction is not that of mainstream or conventional medical care. No surprise here! I have been alarmed at the growing problems of addiction in all areas (food, drugs, medications, and activities) leading to a great deal of suffering by those directly and indirectly affected. The way it’s being treated, or not treated, is equally upsetting, which led me to write and speak on natural approaches to addiction whenever I can.”

The Advanced Brain Recovery AM & PM System Between treating those with addictions, and patients coming off psychiatric meds like antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs, I developed a program that works across the board – regardless of the substance involved – to replace missing nutrients and restore brain balance and sanity. The basis of the program is my Brain Recovery AM & PM formula, consisting of 2 convenient packets take daily, one with breakfast (AM) and one with dinner (PM). Here is what one of my patients, Charles, had to say about his experience with Brain Recovery AM & PM:

“After months of sobriety from stimulants, I was still sleeping poorly and felt exhausted. However, within a week of taking Dr. Cass’ Brain Recovery AM & PM formula I was amazed to find that I was able to fall asleep easily and deeply. I woke up rested, and my energy and focus lasted all day. I noticed that I was dreaming, too, which I hadn’t for a long time. I felt as if my brain was restoring itself!”

Charles then got a new job, began a stable relationship both of which have continued to this day, 3 years later, and he feels great. Another patient, Anne, used Brain Recovery AM & PM to stop her many-years use of the prescription antidepressant, Zoloft, and with no withdrawal effects. Others take it to avoid going on antidepressants in the first place.

Another tip: when you have a craving – anything from alcohol to sugar – take a capsule of Glutamine, open it up and dump it’s contents under your tongue. Voila! The craving is gone. Till next time, stay brain-healthy. Yours in good health. Hyla Cass, MD P.S. FRUSTRATED DIETERS: My friend and colleague JJ Virgin’s new book, The Virgin Diet, is about to be released.
