5HTP

Carol asked 4 years ago

Dear Dr Cass
A lot of articles on 5-HTP states that one should not take it on a continual basis, e.g 3 weeks on 1 week off  Do you agree with this.  I was hoping that your 100 5-HTP could be taken all the time.  Is there any side effects that one should watch for in using 5-HTP.

Thank you – your site is a godsend

In my experience, there is no limit as to length of time to take 5-HTP. As long as the individual is responding well, it’s fine.

The question may be — are they getting enough of the other amino acids? That is why I developed Brain Recovery AM&PM which contains the others as well, to raise dopamine, and GABA as well as serotonin. It is a one-stop shopping formula for brain neurotransmitter support. Add in more 5 HTP if they need that — and it’s described here on my website. Let me know how you (or whoever you are writing about) are doing.

Warning: if you are taking an SSRI antidepressant, you need to allow 2 hours or more between them to avoid a theoretical possibility of overload of serotonin, called serotonin syndrome. It would be unusual in this case i.e. since it is not mixing 2 drugs but a drug and an amino acid. Nonetheless, it is better to be cautious.
