Hello Dr. Cass,
I just listened to your interview with Trudy Scott, from her anxiety summit. I hope you’ll be on again in 2017!
I consider myself a “recovering fitness addict.” I have never been diagnosed, but it is the best way to describe myself. I struggled with an eating disorder for most of my life and my “identity” and “self-worth” was deeply rooted in my success as a college athlete. I also worked in fitness for 14 years until I became so burnt out. I have since found a new, healthier relationship with exercise.
I wonder if you have any experience with “fitness addiction” and/or fitness related eating disorders – the compulsiveness, fear, anxiety, secrecy, shame, restricting, controlling, comparing, critiquing, etc. (all in the name of “fitness”).
Maybe if the anxiety was treated, it would help with the behaviors?
Thank you for your time. I really appreciate your work, and the hope of healing without medications (I’ve never used). I would like to help others recover, as well as shatter the superficial portrayal of “health” that often leads to these destructive behaviors and thinking.
